The folklore ensemble "Balagan" of the Saratov regional philharmonic, named after Alfred Schnittke, is a laureate of various all-Russian and international competitions and a grand prix award holder of an international competition. The ensemble was founded in 1989 and is under the leadership of artistic director Alexander Kurilenko.
The framework of the repertoire — the best samples of folk music from different regions of Russia. These are bylinas, skomoroshins, lingering peasant songs of the XVIII century and urban romance of the XIX century, as well as spiritual poems, legends, apocryphal, traditional plays, fairy tales, round dance games, and ditties. However, the ensemble does not limit itself to traditional music only; in the repertoire of the ensemble, are also widely presented original songs from the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, Soviet mass songs, and adapted music from modern composers.
